The British High Commissioner's residence played host to its annual reception celebrating the Chevening Scholars on Friday evening of July 23rd 2023.

The event was set to welcome the returning batch of Chevening scholars who had completed their studies and bid farewell to the new cohort of scholars who are traveling to the UK under the prestigious exchange program.

The Chevening Scholars program enables talented young African professionals and graduate students to pursue postgraduate degrees at top UK universities. Now in its 40th year, the program has supported over 200 scholars to date.

High Commissioner Dr. Christian Dennys-McClure, who has served in the role for the past two years, attended the reception for what would be his final official function. In his remarks, the High Commissioner congratulated both the outgoing and incoming scholars, praising their academic excellence, leadership potential and commitment to strengthening ties between the two countries.

Sahyuo Achuo Dze, a 2021/2022Chevening scholar shared his experience, with The Post.

‘‘Chevening is a leadership and networking scholarship. They look for leaders in their professions who are going to increase their education and expand their network to help build their community. That was one of the motivations, added to the fact that it was a fully funded program with full tuition and allowance to permit you to study without thinking all the time about where the rent is going to come rom and all these things…’’ he said.

Sahyuo Achuo Dze took an MSc in Subsurface Energy Systems at Heriot-Watt University. He went added that, being a Chevening scholar opened his eyes to all he would have achieved within the two past years of getting his Master degree before traveling to the UK for the program.

The event was attended by heads of industry and professionals across multiple sectors in addition to the Chivening scholars. The event highlighted the importance of education, cultural exchange and people-to-people ties in building understanding and trust between nations.

The Chevening scholarship covers Cameroon, Chad and Equatorial Guinea. A total of 13 Chevening scholars were sponsored in the 2021/2022 batch. Two among these 13 came from Chad and Equatorial Guinea.
