CHRC Condemns Human Rights Violations In Cameroon Conflict Rage Regions


The Cameroon Human Right Commission, CHRC has condemned acts of violence and Human Rights violations perpetuated in Cameroon's conflict-stricken regions Far North, Northwest and Southwest.


This was during the commemoration of the 75th edition of the International Human Rights day in Yaounde on Saturday, December 10.


According to the commission, there has been numerous cases of human rights violations in the conflict affected regions which must not go unpunished.


The celebration was themed: "Dignity, Freedom and Justice for All".


With the #StandUp4Human- Rights, the CHRC emphasized on the fair understanding, recognition and respect of the rights and merits of every indi- vidual.


Hammering on the theme of the occasion, the commission chair condemned acts of extreme violence calling on the authorities to track down, arrest and bring before competent courts, perpetrators of such acts.


Aside from that, it also criticized all dehumanizing and disgraceful acts of violence and abuses, while pointing out the fact that 90% of cases of sexual violence against children are committed at home or by friends.


Torture and discrimination on persons were also among violations sanctioned by the CHRC, not leaving out the use of drugs especially by youths in schools and the increasing rate of household and societal violence.


As remedy to all these, the Chairperson of the commission called on; families to provide the same quality of education for their disabled and able-bodied children while traditional rulers were urged to eradicate violence against women like female genital mutilation, and called on specialized centres to provide free medical and psychological support to victims of torture.


According to the commission, justice system is not fair as they called on the government to create concrete measures to enable victims of human rights violations to seek justice by rapidly handling their cases, so that they can rebuild their families, academic, professional and social lives.


In recommendation to the State of Cameroon, the Commission called for an increase on the human, financial and material resources of the structures responsible for the protection of the rights of victims of human rights violations.


However, it encouraged the Government in the campaign of the issuance of birth certificates to children as it guarantees effective protection of victims of harmful practices.
